winter flowering clematis (group 1)
- Position: Full sun or partial shade
- Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil
- Rate of growth: Fast
- Flowering period: April to May
- Hardiness: Fully hardy
‘Michiko’ is an early flowering evergreen Clematis boasting a profusion of starry white blooms, each up to 5cm (2in) wide, adorned with striking yellow-green anthers. With its free-flowering nature, this compact variety delights from early spring, perfect for patio containers or cascading over low walls.
Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these clematis in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
- Humans: Skin irritant; Pets: Harmful if eaten
