Phlox drummondii 'Cherry Caramel'
phlox
- Position: full sun
- Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, or general-purpose potting compost for containers
- Rate of growth: fast
- Flowering: June to September
- Hardiness: frost tender annual
An upright annual flaunting small lance-shaped dark-green leaves and abundant clusters of flowers in an enchanting array of cream-caramel and soft pink hues. These enduring, delicately scented blooms serve as excellent pot fillers and cut flowers, thriving from summer well into late autumn. While requiring support for its delicate stems, once planted densely, 'Cherry Caramel' thrives independently, showcasing clusters of pale caramel white blooms with blush pink centres, creating a charming display reminiscent of coffee, raspberry, and cream in this stunning annual phlox, perfect for long-lasting arrangements both in the garden and as a vase centrepiece.
Grow on under glass until all risk of frost has passed and they can be planted outside in a well-prepared bed or container. Pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushier growth, and feed at regular intervals throughout summer with a high-potash fertiliser. Taller plants may need supporting with brushwood stems in exposed positions.
In early spring, sow seed shallowly in seed trays and keep under glass, transplanting them into individual pots when large enough to handle. Harden off before planting outside after the frosts. Alternatively, sow in-situ in mid- to late spring in a well-prepared bed and thin the seedlings out as they grow to allow approximately 30cm between each.
