This distinctive succulent is prized for its striking foliage born from large rosettes and is a cross between a Sempervivum and an Aeonium. Unlike similar purple aeonium hybrids that fade in winter, this variety maintains its rich dark tones even in low light. After a few years, the established rosette may branch into multiple crowns and is a hybrid that continues to grow throughout much of the year. Voted Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2022, 'Destiny' is an exotic and botanical drought-tolerant curiosity for summer patio displays.
Plants will need protection in winter so move them to a dry, frost-free spot (a bright windowsill would be ideal). In summer, water sparingly as they are well adapted to dry conditions and will draw on water stored in their succulent leaves. Grow on in a loam-based potting compost with added extra grit. Water moderately when in growth, not at all when dormant during the cooler months. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly throughout the growing season. Unlike their parent plants, they do not have a period of dormancy.
