Traditional Japanese lopping shears with forged carbon steel blades and stout handles made from shock-absorbing white oak.

This is a beautifully put together tool, made in Sanjo by a family business that blends generations-old blacksmithing techniques with more efficient production methods. It doesn’t have a ratchet action, nor any other bells and whistles, but the blades are so keen you won’t need it.

Suitable for slicing through branches up to 2.5cm thick. Please keep in mind some species are harder than others, so this is a guide rather than an absolute.

Care for your pair

Look after your loppers by only using them on plant matter - never wire, stone, plastic or other hard materials - and always cutting on the diagonal. Use the base of the blades rather than the tip for heavier cuts and never twist them or apply uneven pressure.

Clean and dry the blades after every use (a Crean Mate and water are all you need), apply a coat of camellia oil and store in a dry place. Sharpen with a whetstone every time you use them - you’ll notice the difference.
