A beautiful, compact, blue spruce that would make an excellent specimen tree for a winter border or lawn surrounding bed, ‘Hoopsii' develops into a conifer of narrowly conical growth. The dense needles are silvery-blue, almost as though they carry a layer of frost all year round, making this a perfect evergreen foil for other winter interest plantings such as colourful dogwoods and scented viburnums.

  • Garden care:
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and of the same depth and backfill with plenty of organic matter (composted pine needles or ericaceous compost are good subsitutes). After planting, water the tree deeply and continue to water regularly during the first growing season to establish a robust root system. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, but keep the mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot. Prune dead or damaged branches as needed, and ensure the tree has good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Remove any competing leaders that appear in spring, and at the same time, cut out any weak or misshapen shoots.
