Carex buchananii
Buchanan's Sedge
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: moisture retentive soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: July to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
This is such a versatile grass, the coppery-brown leaves and delicate and discrete brown flowers (appearing in summer) work wonderfully well in borders and containers. If you’re a fan of apricot-orange blooms and dark purple you have a perfect planting companion! We've even seen it planted in a chic, urban windowbox with Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Kokuryu'. If you have four-legged friends, Buchanan's sedge has even greater appeal as a chewy thing, so you may want to think carefully about where you position them! - Garden care: Comb through the plant in winter to remove dead foliage. Feed with a general purpose fertiliser during the growing season and if necessary, lift and divide over-large clumps in early spring.
