Traditional clay irrigation pots are excellent for low-maintenance gardening and help keep pots watered on warm days and when you are away. When buried into the compost and filled with water they deliver a steady supply of moisture right to plants’ roots.

These hand-thrown terracotta ollas are designed for use in our large pots. Their slender shape means you can easily fit plants around them with space for them to develop a good root system.

Bury one neck-deep in a planter and fill it with water. The porous clay will let water seep through to nearby roots. In time, your plants’ roots may attach themselves to the olla so they can draw out the water they need.

While the soil is still moist water will remain inside the olla so your pots won't get waterlogged. This form of irrigation is extremely efficient. With no water run-off or loss from evaporation it’s thought to use up to 70% less water than traditional watering. It even leads to fewer weeds and snails!

Each olla is fired at 1080°C to make it as frost resistant as possible, but we recommend removing them from pots and moving to a sheltered spot in the colder months. With time and exposure the clay will age to an attractive patina as the salts leach to the surface.

Please note: white specks in the terracotta are naturally occuring lime granules. Occasionally when fired the clay around them can split out a little, but this won’t compromise the strength of the olla. Lime helps to bind the clay and ultimately makes for a stronger product. As these are hand thrown, the measurements are approximate.
