This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: November to March
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

'December Dwarf' has strongly fragranced pink-flushed white to pale pink flowers from early winter until spring. Well suited to smaller gardens, this medium-sized, compact and bushy, deciduous shrub has attractive, finely toothed mid-green foliage and its sweet-smelling flowers are ideal for cutting and drying.

  • Garden care: When planting ‘December Dwarf’, incorporate some well-rotted compost or manure in the planting hole and a scoop of mycorrhizal fungi to aid root establishment. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Water shrubs regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods. After flowering, prune established specimens, removing up to one in five of the oldest and weakest branches to the base. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
