The plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.

This is a great combination for a lightly shaded spot. The foliage of the fern is lush and lovely, while the astrantia will add some colour in summer.

In this collection you will receive three of each of the following plants. They are all supplied in 9cm nursery pots.

  • Astrantia 'Hadspen Blood': Sultry, dark red button flowers, surrounded by a ruff of near-black bracts are produced from June to August above deeply lobed, dark green leaves with almost imperceptible black margins. This stunning, dark red astrantia works equally well in contemporary and cottage-style plantings. For best colour, plant it in fertile, moist soil in full sun. Grows to 90cm.

  • Dryopteris filix-mas: A native, male fern found naturally in moist woodlands around the UK. This large, deciduous fern has feathery green fronds, which form a distinctive, shuttlecock shape and turn coppery in autumn. It makes a fine companion for shade-loving woodland plants, especially other ferns, and when its leaves die back, the space can be filled with early flowering spring bulbs such as snowdrops. Grows to 1m.

  • Planting tips: Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
