Magnolia Shirazz ('Vulden')
syn. Magnolia 'Vulden' or Magnolia 'Shirazz'
This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.
- Position: Full sun or partial shade
- Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: Average
- Flowering period: April
- Hardiness: Fully hardy
This small but highly ornamental tree erupts with large, goblet-shaped flowers in an opulent burgundy-pink shade. As the shapely buds open, they reveal paler interiors and flatten to reveal their full dramatic colour. The deep green summer foliage emerges later, providing a lush, leafy backdrop once the floral show finishes. Though compact in scale, 'Shirazz' makes its presence felt, lighting up the landscape with rich, decadent hues just when it is needed most.
Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in midsummer. Plant in a sheltered spot, adding plenty of ericaceous compost to the planting hole. Mulch in spring with manure and leafmould, especially in dry soils.
