This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  This new form (which is a cross between H. x ericsmithii and H. x hybrida), is noted for its super-sized, mainly upright to outward-facing flowers, its ease of growth and its natural vigour. Flowering freely during some of the darkest months of the year, it's also more tolerant of sun than many other forms.
  
  
• Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould, compost or manure to the planting hole. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring.
