Coprosma repens Pacific Night ('Hutpac') (PBR)
coprosma (syn. Coprosma repens 'Hutpac')
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: slow
- Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need winter protection)
Thriving in acidic to neutral soils, this evergreen shrub captivates with its glossy, deep purple-red rounded leaves that retain their striking hue throughout the year, especially noticeable in the winter months. Exhibiting a compact growth habit, ‘Pacific Night’ transforms into a modestly sized shrub, perfect for basking in the warmth of sunny and sheltered gardens, or even thriving in a large pot if desired. Its iconic glossy foliage, characteristic of Coprosma species, makes for an elegant backdrop to brighter coloured foreground plants and flowers, with its deep purple tones creating a singular interest all of its own.
In spring, lightly trim any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Afterwards apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted leaf mould or composted pine needles around the base of the plant. Protect from cold winter winds and avoid planting in cold, wet, exposed areas.
