  • Initially red, the emerging young leaves mature to become shiny, wrinkled and green, softening to a curious, aged upholstered look, a bit like a well-loved and worn settee! Begonia metallica is a tall, cane-type rhizomatous perennial, and is well suited to an indirectly lit indoor space, nestled to a nest of occasional tables next to that well-worn sofa? Pink flowers periodically pop out from under the cushion-like foliage.

We’re proud to support our British growers, and having been raised by one of our trusted UK nurseries, this indoor plant has a low carbon footprint, which makes it perfect for an eco-friendly collection or gift.

  • Home care:
Cane-stemmed begonias thrive with ample light, but it's essential to shield them from direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch. The ideal temperature range for their growth is between 15-22°C (58-72°F). To ensure their well-being, it's crucial not to let the compost dry out completely, though overwatering should be avoided. In winter, reduce watering frequency accordingly.

Maintaining proper humidity levels is key. Placing the container on a tray of gravel or expanded clay granules and keeping it moist, with the water level just below the gravel's surface, helps achieve this. For nourishment, well-established plants can be fed with a high-potassium plant feed fortnightly from May to September.

When it comes to compost, using a multipurpose mixture, preferably peat-free and based on coir, is beneficial as it helps prevent problems with sciarid flies. Alternatively, John Innes No 2 compost is also a suitable option for cultivation.
