Pinus mugo 'Winter Gold'
dwarf mountain pine 'Wintergold'
- Position: full sun
- Soil: moist, well-drained neutral to slightly acid soil
- Rate of growth: slow-growing
- Hardiness: fully hardy
A beautiful splash of golden foliage is always welcome, particularly during the darker months, and ‘Winter Gold’ excels as a slow-growing, compact conifer for city pots, contemporary gardens and of course Japanese-style gardens. Paired, twisted needles emerge bright green in spring before turning golden-yellow during winter. Wind and pollution tolerant, this dwarf mountain pine works well as an accent plant or to provide scale to other coniferous plantings. - Garden care: Pruning is not usually necessary, however any shoots that ruin the symmetry of the plant can be removed in autumn. Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant (avoiding the immediate crown) in late winter.
