This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Once established, this large shrub will really put on a great show, and as it offers interest in spring, summer and autumn, it is definitely worth including in the planting scheme. In spring, the foliage emerges with a soft bronze flush, but soon reverts to a lovely fresh green. From midsummer, the larger than average flower plumes appear in an impressive flush, which virtually cover the foliage in a soft pink haze. Come the autumn, the foliage turns the most amazing mix of yellow, orange, red and purple. It's dazzling!

  • Garden care: In late winter or early spring remove any misplaced, diseased or crossing branches. Alternatively, to produce larger leaves, cut the stems back hard to within two or three buds of the base in early spring. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
