  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: light, sandy soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to July or August to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

These low-growing perennials are much-loved for their large, dark-eyed flowers, which have velvet-like petals that open up to form gorgeous saucers. Traditionally anemone bulbs (tubers) are planted in spring and will produce flowers in early summer, however if they are planted later (up to the end of June), they will flower from August to October.

Each collection contains 60 tubers, 20 of each of the following:

  • Mr Fokker: Their intensely coloured violet-blue flowers make charming additions to the vase and look lovely at the front of a sunny border. Grows to 25cm.

  • The Bride: Slender stems rise from the mounds of dissected foliage bearing green-centred, white flowers in early spring. Their simple elegance looks divine when planted in large numbers. Grows to 30cm.

  • Hollandia: A low growing tuberous perennial, which is much-loved for its large, black-eyed, red flowers, which appear in spring over mounds of finely dissected foliage. The velvet-like petals form large open bowls, and gradually open out even further before they fall to create saucer-like plates. Grows to 30cm.

  • Garden care: Plant pre-soaked tubers 5-8cm deep and 15cm apart in light, sandy soil in a sunny, protected site. Cover with a cloche or dry mulch to protect against extreme winter weather.

  • CAUTION do not eat ornamental bulbs
