Giant-sized heads (up to 18cm across), which are loosely packed with slender, star-shaped flowers, look spectacular when they appear in late spring or early summer. A great structural addition to the mixed border, they are best planted with lower-growing leafy plants that can mask their foliage, which dies back before the flowers emerge. Relatively compact in stature (in comparison to the size of the head), it's a handsome and reliable grower.

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs 15cm deep and 15cm apart to enjoy the full effect of the flowers. Avoid excessive soil moisture, and split and divide large clumps in autumn or spring. Resist cutting back the faded flowers as these will go on to produce decorative seedheads.
  • Pets: TOXIC if eaten; Humans: Ornamental bulbs - not to be eaten
