This bulb dies back after flowering each year and enters a period of rest ahead of regrowth the following season.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, or general-purpose compost for containers
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: March to April
  • Hardiness: fully hardy
  • Bulb size: 11/12

A petite yet resilient gem, 'Hilde' stands at a modest 20-25cm tall (8-10in), adorned with slender strap-like leaves. Its fluted pink-flushed, white flowers gradually unfold with delicate darker pink stripes and tips as they mature, revealing vibrant yellow throats. With the capacity to produce up to three blossoms per stem, this dainty tulip is perfect for rock gardens or as a front border highlight. Whether nestled in small pots within an alpine house or flourishing in a cold greenhouse, 'Hilde' prefers well-drained, gritty soil over peat-free general-purpose compost.

  • Garden care:
Plant bulbs in pots from September. For borders, we advise waiting until after the first frosts (November to December) to reduce the risk of potential disease such as Tulip Fire. Plant bulbs 15-20cm (6-8in) deep and 10-15cm (4-6in) apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Alternatively, allow 7-9 bulbs per 30cm sq or 60-75 bulbs per m². After flowering dead-head and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser each week for the first month. Once the foliage has died down naturally, lift the bulbs and store in a cool greenhouse.
    • Humans: Harmful if eaten; skin allergen; Pets: Ornamental bulbs - not to be eaten
