The plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.

The grass creates a softly swirling sea, which is punctuated by the bobble-like flowerheads of the sanguisorba. Super.

In this collection you will receive three of each of the following plants. They are all supplied in a 9cm nursery pot.

  • Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster': A stiff, erect habit is the defining feature of this grass, named after the famous German plantsman who introduced it to the public in the 1950s. Plant it en-masse to form a feathery screen, or in small groups to add height and definition to a perennial border. It also looks good planted next to buildings. This is one of the earliest perennial grasses to get going, with shoots appearing in early spring, followed by flowers that are green first, then fade to buff. Grows to 1.8m.

  • Sanguisorba 'Tanna': Spires of dark red blooms appear above crimped, blue-grey foliage from summer through to autumn. A lovely, compact burnet, introduced from Japan, spreads slowly to form a 40cm wide mass. Though the flowers are stunning, this plant is often grown just for its interesting and attractive foliage. Grows to 50cm.

  • Planting tips: Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
