This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, including dry
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

One of the smallest of the achilleas, this grows to only 60cm so is perfect for the front of the border. The flowers come in flattened clusters from 5-10cm across and are a pale creamy-yellow. They are produced in mid and late summer and are held on gently branching stems above the greyish-green leaves. Yarrows are generally happier in hot, dry spots, but 'Taygetea' copes better than the others with more moisture. Plant it with grasses for a wild-looking prairie border, or fit it in with other summer flowering perennials for a long season of colour.

  • Garden care: Stake using bamboo canes or brushwood before the flowers appear. Cut down to the ground in late winter, but resist the urge to do this earlier, as the seed heads look lovely in the winter light. Lift and divide large clumps in late autumn or early spring.
