This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, including dry soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: June to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Flattened flowerheads are made up of masses of small, white-eyed wine-red flowers that appear over a long period in summer. They are held high on tall stems above the ferny foliage, helping to attract beneficial insects including bees into the garden. Tolerant of drought once established, 'Summerwine' is a sun-loving plant that looks great in the herbaceous border, and it mixes well with ornamental grasses. It also makes an excellent cut flower.

  • Garden care: Avoid overly wet conditions, particularly in winter, and in exposed positions stake using bamboo canes or brushwood before the flowers appear. Cut down to the ground in late winter, but resist the urge to do this earlier, as the seed heads look lovely in low winter light. Lift and divide large clumps in late autumn or early spring.
